Chapter 6
âSo then,â Taylor was doubled over with laughter at my expense. âafter she snaked my wave, she looked back to gloat and had the biggest wipe out. You should have seen her face. The look of surprise as she flew through the air was a joy to behold.â
Seeing as how Iâd walked out of the water in one piece not clutching any body parts or needing a trip to the hospital, Aiesha joined in on the laughter. She did have the grace to spare me a brief sympathetic look.
âYeah, yeah, yuck it up,â I said. âI won the day anyway.â
âWon?â Aiesha asked. âHow do you win surfing?â
âWell, there are surfing competitions, of course, and one wins those by scoring the most points, but today I won by catching more waves.â I crossed my arms smugly.
âOnly if you count that one that you wiped out on. Otherwise, itâs a tie,â Taylor pointed out.
âHa, it counts. I caught the wave. I stood up. It counts.â
âWhatever,â Taylor waved her hand dismissively.
We were spared further argument by the arrival of dinner. Taylor had insisted on taking us out to dinner to thank us for letting her crash on our futon. She and I were both starving after our surfing session and despite the start of bread and olives, we were too consumed with tearing into the food to continue the conversation. Aiesha, a little less famished, commented, âA little focused on the food, are we?â
I realized Iâd been practically hunched over my plate, shoveling in the truly delicious lasagnette, which Iâd assumed was a sort of lasagna and had been pleased to see I was mostly correct. It was a narrower noodle, but a baked pasta dish, this one containing squash and broccoli rabe. I sat up and made an effort to slow down. I did want to enjoy my food. I laughed a little. âI am pretty hungry, and this is very good.â I pointed my fork down on my plate. âHowâs your pizza?â
She smiled at me. âGood, but it may be too much. I imagine I can pawn a slice or two off on you?â
âWellâ¦â I pretended to ponder the question. âI meanâ¦if forced.â
Taylor, whoâd been looking back and forth between us while eating her ravioli said, âOh my god. You two are so freaking adorable. And Iâll take the pizza if Kade canât be bothered.â
âNo way. That pizza is mine.â I paused. âUnless there are two slices and then I could share.â I turned to Aiesha and laughed. âNo pressure. You should eat as much as you like.â
âDonât worry, I will.â She took a bite to emphasize her point.
âI feel like youâve met your match,â Taylor said.
âOh, no. Iâm way out of my league.â I squeezed Aieshaâs hand.
She squeezed back, but said, âI have no idea why youâd say that.â
âIâm a high school teacher, youâre a college professor. Iâm not bad to look at, but youâre gorgeous. Iâm smart, but youâre super smart.â I shrugged. âClearly way out of my league.
